Winemaker Giorgos Vourvoukelis uses one of Greece’s most popular grape varieties to create an ingenious version of the varietal experts consider the “greatest white wine from Greece”. Appropriately naming his creation after the sole grape it is made from, his 100% Assyrtiko is produced from organic grapes grown near the Thracian Sea, resulting in a wine with superior aromas and flavors.

Variety: 100% Assyrtiko. Its mineral profile has made it popular for use in blended wines, but this version from Vourvoukeli Estate is made solely from Assyrtiko grapes.

Similar To: Chablis, Sauvignon Blanc

Tastes Like: The light golden color and crispness of this full-bodied white wine can be attributed to its 4-month rest in stainless steel tanks. It has high acidity like a Chablis, and is earthier and more citrus-forward than Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. There are aromas of lemongrass, asparagus, white flowers, and pineapple. It is dry and crisp on the tongue with strong lemon characteristics.

Pairs With: Versatile enough for any occasion or dish, it goes especially well with grilled seafood, shellfish, green salads, cooked vegetables, herb-seasoned meats, cheesecakes, and pies.

Alcohol: 13%. The Assyrtiko grape is often referred to as a “white grape in red’s clothing”, due to the full-bodied and high-alcohol wine it produces.

PGI Avdira: Some of the most premium Greek wines are those labeled with a PGI. This wine is produced in the Protected Geographical Indication area of Avdira, a fishing village situated in the district of Xanthi in Thrace. It has a long tradition of winegrowing and winemaking, and is the most active winegrowing area of Thrace today.
